Timing your Egypt trip correctly can mean the difference between a magical experience and an exhausting one. Egypt's climate varies significantly between seasons, and different months bring different advantages. Here's your complete month-by-month guide.
The Short Answer
**October to April** is the best period overall. Temperatures are comfortable (20-28Β°C in Cairo, slightly warmer in Luxor and Aswan), skies are clear, and all major sites are accessible.
**Peak season** is December-January β expect higher prices and larger crowds at sites like the Great Pyramid and Valley of the Kings, but the weather is ideal.
**Budget season** is June-August β hotel prices drop 30-50% and tourist sites are nearly empty, but temperatures in Upper Egypt regularly exceed 45Β°C.
Month-by-Month Breakdown
October: One of the best months. Summer heat fades, crowds haven't arrived yet, and prices are moderate. Perfect for a Nile cruise.
November: Excellent weather everywhere. Temperatures in Luxor average 28Β°C. A sweet spot before December crowds.
December: Peak season begins. Christmas and New Year drive prices up. Book accommodation and tours well in advance. The weather is ideal.
January: Coolest month β Cairo can drop to 9Β°C at night. Perfect for desert excursions and temple visits in Upper Egypt. Still high season.
February: Temperatures begin rising. Fewer crowds than December-January. Great value. Our 5 Days Cairo, Luxor & Abu Simbel Tour runs frequently this month.
March: Spring arrives. Occasional sandstorms (khamsin winds) can disrupt travel in the desert. Generally pleasant.
April: Getting warmer. Last month of comfortable touring in Upper Egypt. Ramadan dates shift yearly β check if it falls in April, as restaurant hours may change.
May: The heat begins in earnest. Red Sea diving is excellent this month as water temperatures are perfect (24-26Β°C).
June-August: Extreme heat in Upper Egypt (40-48Β°C). Only recommended for the Red Sea coast, where sea breezes moderate temperatures. If you do visit temples, go at dawn or dusk.
September: Heat begins to subside. Still hot in Upper Egypt but Cairo becomes more manageable. Low-season prices continue.
Special Events Worth Timing For
**Abu Simbel Sun Festival** (Feb 22 and Oct 22): Twice a year, sunlight penetrates the inner sanctuary of Abu Simbel temple and illuminates three of the four statues. A truly magical event, but very crowded.
Ramadan: A beautiful cultural experience if you're prepared. Restaurants may close during the day, but the iftar (breaking of fast) celebrations each evening are festive and welcoming. Many attractions keep shorter hours.
**Coptic Christmas** (January 7): Celebrated across Egypt with church services and festivities, especially in Coptic Cairo.
Our Recommendation
For first-time visitors: **October or February**. You get great weather, reasonable prices, and manageable crowds. For budget travelers willing to handle the heat: **May or September** offer the best value.
